Byron Bay is the easternmost end of Australia's mainland. It is a city by the ocean at the northeastern corner of New South Wales. Its distance from Sydney is about 772 km. and 165 km. from Brisbane.

The ancient name of Byron Bay was 'Cavvanbah' given by the Aboriginal tribes which mean 'meeting place'. Captain James Cook later named this area after one of his fellow sailor John Byron.

Byron Bay is an important industrial area for several industries like cedar logging, gold mining, fishing and whaling.

The first jetty in Byron Bay was built in 1886. Cape Byron Lighthouse was built at the easternmost corner of Australia in 1901. At the late 1800s, the dairy industry started to spread in this region. Today Byron Bay has become one of the most expensive residential areas in the east coast of Australia.

Byron Bay is a famous tourist destination in Australia for both local and foreign tourists for its lovely beaches, countryside beauty and relaxed lifestyle. The destination is renowned for surfboarding, scuba diving and whale watching.

A series of white sandy beaches in Byron Bay stretch from north to south offers plenty of water sports. The main beach is ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Clarkes beach is a good place to learn surfing. The Wreck, The Pass, Wategos Beach and Cosy Corner are well-known beaches for surfing. Julian Rocks Marine Reserve is a place for seeing the sea turtles in their natural habitat.

Other than beach activities, travelers indulge themselves in historic sites visiting, skydiving, bushwalking, hot air ballooning etc.

For shopping, eating and nightlife, Jonson Street is a popular place.

Byron Bay can be accessed by air from Sydney and Melbourne via Ballina/Byron Airport. Regular buses travel between Sydney and Brisbane via Byron Bay. There are no direct train services to Byron Bay. The nearest rail station is in Casino city which is about 76 km away.
