Tourist Attractions in Yarralumla, ACT

Yarralumla is a large suburb with an area of 8.81 square km. located about 3.5 kilometers south-west of Canberra city. It lies along the bank of Lake Burley Griffin. Although the area of Yarralumla is quite big, the population is small in this area because of the existence of many open spaces, parks and diplomatic missions.

Yarralumla was leased to Henry Donnison in 1828 who was a merchant from Sydney. This area was named Yarralumla after conducting a survey among the local residents in 1834. Yarralumla is a term used by the indigenous people which mean “echo”. In 1881, this land was bought by Frederick Campbell, a successor of Robert Campbell. Frederick Campbell built the Government House in 1891 which is now the official residence of the Governor-General of Australia.

There are many landmarks and places of historical interest in Yarralumla that are worth visiting.

The iconic landmark of Yarralumla is the Government House. This is a three-storied large brick building set amid 54 hectors of land. It has a spectacular green field and many trees and gardens inside the complex. The complex is not open for public; however, it can be viewed from the lookout at Lady Denman Drive.

Many foreign embassies located in Yarralumla and many of the countries build their embassy building inspired by their own country’s architectural style. Most of the embassies are located at the eastern end of Yarralumla. Tour operators conduct tours to these embassies for the tourists.

Lennox Gardens is another attractive place in Yarralumla. It is a large park located on the south of Lake Burley Griffin. Many memorials and monuments are built inside the garden to commemorate several historical events related to Australia’s history.
